We have been travelling and moving around the last 2 months. Just got back to KL yesterday and we were so pleased to find a copy of Art Malaysia Issue 10 (Nov-Dec 2010) waiting for us on the breakfast table.

We are so happy and excited today. Thanks to Ms. Yeo Li Shian who picked up our project for Urban cover story, we have more than 100 new Likes on our page just today! Amazing. Thanks to all our readers and participants for their support as well! You guys are the best.

We have an announcement too: Project Raksasa Doodles submission deadline is now extended another 3 months until 31 March 2011.

Hopefully we will be able to get more submission and hit our dream target of 1,000 doodles. Wouldn't that be great?

In the meantime, we are also working hard over at this end trying to secure a sponsor to print all your doodles...and also venue sponsors for the doodle exhibition at the end of the project. If you guys have contacts whom you think might be interested, please email me: amy@squeakartasia.com

Project Raksasa Doodles collaborates with Artmakr to print selected artworks on doodle notebooks

Kuala Lumpur, September 16, 2010: Project Raksasa Doodles is Squeak Art Asia’s first social art initiative to increase public participation in art and heighten art appreciation in their daily lives. The project started last August and is on-going until 5 December 2010. Artmakr recently joined in the cause and will select artworks submitted to the project to be printed on special edition Artmakr doodle notebook covers.

Squeak Art Asia chose doodling as the medium for its first social art initiative as everyone has doodled at some point in their lives.

“We want people to see that art appears everywhere around us, that any regular person is artistic in his or her own way without being an artist,” quipped Amy Leong, one of the founders of Squeak Art Asia.

In fact, doodles can sometimes have a deeper connection to what we really feel and think; because most of the time, doodles are drawn from the subconscious.

“This is a perfect collaboration as Artmakr’s products inspire people to learn, create, experience and exhibit their artwork. More often than not, a doodle can be developed into a more intricate and heavy artwork,” comments Jason Chen, Managing Director of Artmakr.

Squeak Art Asia is founded by two sisters, Amy & Cecilia Leong, with the aim of promoting the art of our local talents and to awaken the artist within every one of us through affordable artworks which will be made available at their e-shop this coming October 2010.

Artmakr was founded in 2005 by three creative entrepreneurs; brothers Jason and Alvin Chen, and artist I-Ming Goh, with the idea of meeting the middle ground in art between creative aspiration and high-end art galleries. They provide learning and creation resources through their art products and classes. Currently Artmakr's range of art products is available on their online store, www.artmakr.com/shop as well as at Czip Lee Plus at Bangsar Baru.

Through this collaboration, Squeak Art Asia and Artmakr hope to encourage public participation in Project Raksasa Doodles and possibly even hold an exhibition of all the submitted doodles. They are looking for sponsors for venue and printing, interested parties can reach them at amy@squeakartasia.com or through their facebook page: www.facebook.com/squeak.art.asia

Curated by Chong’s close friend and Nyoba Kan director, Lee Swee Keong, this exhibition showcases Caecar’s unique and keen eye with the camera."

It was abit of a challenge photographing this exhibition as most of Caecar's photographs are framed in glass and reflection was a big problem.

Nevetheless, I was really taken aback by some of his works and hope one day I would be able to take such photographs too.

Riyad Al-Ilm (Garden of Knowledge) (Aug 2010)

Galeri Chandan co-hosted Riyad Al-Ilm (Garden of Knowledge) Art Charity Fundraiser Show, the purpose of which is to raise money to build libraries for the orphanages and underprivileged children.

A total of 50 artists come together to support the cause. The artworks to be displayed ranges from paintings to collages to sculptures, and are all unique and original pieces of work.

Each artist donated a portion or a net profit of their sales during the show to the Islamic Relief as the organiser of this fundraiser.

Project Raksasa Doodles Launched!

1. to scribble or draw aimlessly, especially when preoccupied.

We think by definition doodling is under-credited. Doodles can sometimes have a deeper connection to what we really feel & think.

We just launched Project Raksasa Doodles and we hope to grow the amount of doodle contributions to an INSANE AMOUNT. If we do, we will hold a show and feature all contributions.

It could be doodles on a napkin while you're waiting for your friend at a cafe, it could be doodles on an envelope while you're waiting for your turn at the bank/post office/government office(!), it could be doodles on your lunch receipt while waiting in traffic jam, it could be doodles on scrap paper while waiting for your girlfriend (or boyfriend, nowadays you just never know) to try on clothes during sales!

Now that we're at it, don't doodle on public toilet walls, doodle on toilet paper - take a photo and send it to us. (hahaha, ok that would be really funny).

Come join us, help us make this happen!

Yes, for fun.

Squeak Art Asia supporting an old friend in his debut group exhibition! Good stuff.

Birthmark : Chronicles is a collection of inspiration, parables and experiments visualised in a variety of styles and flavour on canvas. Each artist, struggles in his or her own way to express their observations of life, love and their emotional state-of-mind whilst adding their own artistic twists to their discovery.

Birthmark is a group of artists actively engaged, or pursuing a career, in art for over 10 years. This exhibition is the first collaborative showcase for Chee Way, Mikie Yap, Clifford Narcis & Gary Read.

Photo canvases make great presents too. The client (see below) printed these to be given to her mother who always say she misses the baby granddaughter. Now the proud Por-por can hang these canvases in the living room; and show off her cute granddaughter to her Mahjong kaki friends. Hehehe. As Squeak Art Asia get more orders (and if client permits), we will put up sample references of photo prints.

We deliver the prints already stretched, so all you have to worry about is where to put them!

Art collection is a very stimulating and inspiring hobby for all. It isn’t just for the rich and famous, but even regular everyday people too. There are various forms of art that you can choose from, especially since art’s definition can greatly vary from one person to another. However, it doesn't really matter whatever its form is, you’re the one to make the call on which is attractive and how much are you willing to spend for such piece.

To Go For Prints Or Originals?

In the art world, some people may look down on others due to their different tastes in picking out art. For instance, there are those people who only buy original works and would never even consider buying prints.

However, you should take note that if you’re just starting to collect art and is doing this for
enjoyment then originals are not really necessary to buy, especially if they’re way out of your budget. There is really nothing wrong with buying prints. In fact, these are one superb way to have framed art that would look lovely on your wall, just like how an original would look, but at a way lower price.

Although here, you would not be having the same texture as to the original work; since originals usually show dimension and texture, while prints won't. However, well printed artworks are not settling of course.

In fact, a lot of art collectors have art prints by different artists, which were fairly bought
inexpensively from the Internet, galleries and art fairs. Amazingly, such pieces still look tasteful and classy, instead of cheap looking like what most people expect.

All Framed Up

Once you spot an original or print that you like, you have the option to frame it by yourself or get somebody else to do it for you. Generally, you can find frames in a vast price range, starting from cheaper metal frames to ornate and hand carved wooden frames costing you a fortune.

With regard to using mats, which is another way of framing your picture inside its frame by the use of papers or illustration boards, you should take note that such could detract your print. If you don't know how to frame, then you should get your piece and get
it framed first. While doing so, observe how they’d offer you different mats and frame styles.

You don’t have to hasten up when picking out the mat you want to use. In fact, you should take your time and deliberate on it carefully, since the mat and frame color combinations can have a great effect on how well or bad your artwork would look. You should also consider how the frame would fit-in in whatever place you’ll put it, like your home or your office.

If you want a clean and contemporary look, it’s recommended that you use the Nielsen brushed metal frames, which are not only cheap but are still elegant looking too. These usually come in different colors.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to go for black or bronze. If you’ll be placing them in a gallery, bronze would also do well, especially since it wouldn’t cost you too much. After all, most people that buy art from galleries would have the art they bought re-framed in able for it to match their home decor.

If more of a wood type of person, you can also get wooden frames that are naturally stained. Cherry and mahogany are the most preferred styles when it comes to wooden frames, since their deep and reddish color bring an elegant look to any artwork.

YTL kicked-start Climate Change Week 2010, in the heart of KL City, transforming Lot 10 Shopping Centre into an “Eco Heaven” with a showcase of creative reinventions of various used and recycle materials. Setting an example for its theme “Sustainable Living in the City”, Climate Change Week 2010 seeks to inspire Malaysians via a series of exciting and thought-provoking eco activities that will be held from June 19-27 in Lot 10 Shopping Centre, to show Malaysians how easy it is to go green.

Arrived at TYL's Eco-Heaven Bazaar. These two very lovely girls helped us take a picture with Cheesecake on stage with the recycled backdrop. Love it.

Bijou Bazaar & Art for Grabs was really fun. We were in a super rushed and didn't managed to take many photos. But here are some anyway!

Squeak Art Asia's team arrived at MAP Solaris Dutamas for Bijou Bazaar. Looks like somebody's boyfren was super exhausted from helping out in the kitchen the night before. There was a big box of cupcakes next to him.

Malaysian Youth Festival 2010

Malaysia's largest youth festival with activities in dance, music, shopping, sports and discovery. They say they get about 70,000 visitors to the fair, wow. That's an amazing lot of visitors. Squeak Art Asia's team didnt want to be left out either, so we also went to kaypoh around!

Just got my tickets and one camwhore photo at the entrance to the festival. I feel like Angelina Jolie at Cannes right now, all the cameras are pointed at me. I feel sexy.

This guy, Danial, was like some Energizer Bunny dude. He was holding a placard and smiling like that since 9ish am and when we got out at 3+, there he was with his placard and smile. Awesome.

Looks like a prawn from District 9 got lost and ended up in Kuala Lumpur.

We were excited to stumble upon Jaja Yusof's booth. We are great fans of Yusof Gajah and Jaja's cats are equally as nice!

...Err, there're alot of cats behind me. You think you could hurry up a little on the shot? *cold sweat*
